By elevating the already politicized personally correct to a standard for binormativity, bi women deploy the terms of the dominant system to construct a deviant bisexual other. The outlines of the dominant cultural code and its lesbian interpretations in these interviews are evident: honesty, fidelity, sexual responsibility, and commitments to the unitary and empirically demonstrable sexual subject; even so-called traditional conservative values emerge as constitutive features of the true, proper, really real bisexual. For example, this discourse castigates bisexuals who are “promiscuous,” unpoliticized, or too weak to “take the heat” society directs at lesbians and gays.

The curious case of bisexual women

In an article called Curiouser and Curiouser: the Strange ‘Disappearance’ of Male Bisexuality, British gay journalist Mark Simpson writes about biphobia against bi men, and compares their status to that of bisexual women. “It’s unques­tion­able,” he argues, “that female bisexuality is today much more socially acceptable than male bisexuality, and in fact frequently positively encouraged, both by many voyeuristic men and an equally voyeuristic pop culture.” [This quote is dealt with in greater depth earlier on the chapter]. A slut is someone, usually a woman, who’s stepped outside of the very narrow lane that good girls are supposed to stay within. Sluts are loud. We’re messy. We don’t behave. In fact, the original definition of “slut” meant “untidy woman.” But since we live in a world that relies on women to be tidy in all ways, to be quiet and obedient and agreeable and available (but never aggressive), those of us who color outside of the lines get called sluts. And that word is meant to keep us in line.

Something that has been bothering me for quite awhile is this really negative attitude toward so-called “party bisexuals.” You know, the girl who calls herself bisexual but all she does is get drunk…

True. And I think it’s also really important to remember the considerable amounts of slut shaming coming into play here. The idea behind this type of biphobia is that sexuality is “less authentic” than emotion, that sexually independent women or girls are in fact being “immoral” and that their behaviour is “invalid”. Society seems to treat these women and girls as dangerous and harmful both to themselves and to others, as a sexual emergency which must be stopped. They’re also perceived as damaging to the “pure” (read: desexualized) image of bisexual women, of all queer women or of women in general - which, in turn, paints a straight path into victim blaming and all the “they’re guilty of producing sexual harassment” type of bullshit.

I’ve always understood the word ‘slut’ to mean a woman who freely enjoys her own sexuality in any way she wants to; undisturbed by other people’s wishes for her behaviour. Sexual desire originates in her and is directed by her. In that sense it is a word well worth retaining.
